cover actuaries' fees for valuation of the Widows' and

Orphans' Pension Fund, $1,500 under Police to provide

furniture for the District Officer's new quarters at Taipo

and $500 to meet the cost of the first instalment of dual

desks in Queen's College.

The principal recurrent charges

appearing for the first time are $1,100 for paint and

brushes in connection with the numbering of boats authority

for which was requested in my Despatch No. 271 of 26th.

August last, $500 for shorthand reports of Judgments of

the Supreme Court, inserted by desire of the Chief Justice,

and an addition of $4,000 to the sub-head "Rat Poison,

Rat Traps, etc." under the Sanitary Department to provide

for the destruction of rats on a more extensive scale.

Increases and decreases on

certain sub-heads of Public Works Recurrent result in

a saving of $4,500 on the head.

The programme of new Public Works

Extraordinary for the year 1909 is necessarily a very

limited one owing to scarcity of funds and to outstanding

liabilities for works in progress or to which the Govern➡

-ment is committed.
